The Challenge
For a recent studio renovation in Ara Damansara, the client wanted to create a unique arched opening in a 280mm thick concrete wall measuring 3.8m x 2.6m. Since it was a structural wall, they were concerned about the possibility of wiring or conduits embedded within the section to be cut. The goal was to achieve the design vision without compromising safety or damaging hidden services.
Our Approach & Result
We began with a full Xradar™ concrete scan of the wall to accurately detect any conduits, wiring, or embedded elements that might be in the cutting path. After confirming, we proceeded with the opening works.
As this was a concrete wall, cutting an arch required a precise method. We used diamond concrete coring along the outline of the arch to create clean and controlled “marking” of the curve. Then, using a diamond wall saw, we carefully connected these points to produce a smooth, accurate cut that followed the coring line perfectly. The wall was cut to a finished opening of 2.6m x 2.4m in just 5 days.
Cutting an arch into a concrete wall requires precision, planning, and the right tools. For this project in Ara Damansara, the client wanted a large arched opening as part of their studio renovation. The wall measured 3.8m x 2.6m and 280mm thick needed to be cut safely without damaging any embedded wiring or conduits. We began with Xradar™ enhanced concrete scanning to map the inside of the wall and confirm the cutting path was clear.
An arch requires a controlled method to achieve the curve without chipping or damaging the surrounding concrete, unlike a straight cut. We used diamond concrete coring to drill a series of precise holes along the outline of the arch, essentially “connecting the dots” for the clean cut.
Once the coring was complete, we switched to a diamond wall saw to cut along the pre-cored path. This ensured a smooth, continuous cut that followed the intended shape perfectly, avoiding any jagged edges or overcuts.
In just 5 days, we cut through the 280mm thick wall to create a 2.6m x 2.4m opening. We helped to deliver the client’s design while keeping the structure safe and the finish clean despite being our first project cutting a concrete arch opening.
