The Challenge
Sunway Velocity Mall aimed to improve accessibility by adding a new escalator connecting the basement parking to the lower ground level. This enhancement needed to be executed while the mall remained fully operational, with visitors and shops nearby. The proposed escalator opening required cutting through a concrete slab supporting a live commercial structure—posing risks if not handled with precision. Ensuring the safety of the public and the structural integrity of the slab was the highest priority.
Our Approach & Result
To mitigate risks and ensure informed decision-making, we performed structural scanning using Xradar™ enhanced concrete scanning technology across the proposed 15 m² cutting zone. Within less than an hour, we accurately mapped out critical reinforcements, including post-tension cables and embedded elements within the slab.
The scan was non-destructive, quiet, and performed with zero disruption to mall operations. It provided engineers and contractors with a high-resolution view of what lies beneath the concrete surface, enabling them to proceed confidently with the escalator installation plan.
It is easy to find malls all around Malaysia as it is complete for shopping, dining, entertainment, and even community events, making them a convenient one-stop destination. However, with the many choices, accessibility is one of the key factors that leads to visitors’ preferred destination.
Sunway Velocity Mall, located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, wants to provide more accessibility for their visitors. An additional escalator is currently in the pipeline to connect the basement parking lot directly to the lower ground of the mall.
Nevertheless, they wanted to ensure that none of the visitors and the operation of the shops are disrupted during this upgrading work. Consequently, we were called in to map out the crucial reinforcement within the concrete slab.
We scanned the 15 m2 area with Xradar™ enhanced concrete scanning technology, and mapped out the post tension cable for the client to proceed with the escalator opening. The clear view gave the client confidence and safety assurance to move forward with the installation of the new escalator.
This successful deployment of structural scanning at a high-traffic commercial site demonstrates the importance of early-stage assessment in avoiding costly mistakes. It ensured a safe, smooth execution aligned with safety standards—without affecting tenants, visitors, or structural stability.
