The Challenge

As part of a new grocery store setup at a soon-to-open shopping mall in Petaling Jaya, the client required safe coring points at almost 40 separate points for their utility installation. The concrete slab is built differently from the floors above as it is the same floor as the parking lot which makes the beam and other elements not aligned.

Our Approach & Result

The client is familiar with our capabilities as they reached out to us after a previous scanning job in another part of the same mall. We carried out concrete scanning using Xradar™ technology at all proposed coring points. The scan allowed us to accurately map embedded items such as rebar, conduits, and potential post-tension cables for their utility installation. Then, our team continued carrying out the coring works at approved locations.

We then stitch cored into 4 structural beams to accommodate a custom staircase anchoring system. At these locations, we cored to precise depth and alignment to allow the staircase to latch onto a newly installed I-beam, ensuring proper load transfer and long-term integrity.

To complete the works, we executed beam-slab intersection strengthening to accommodate the new opening and reinforced the surrounding slab areas. Despite the time limitations and the fact that all work had to be completed overnight, the full scope including cutting, coring, and strengthening, was completed within 11 nights, without disrupting mall operations.
