The Challenge
As part of upgrading works at a water tank facility in Ampang Jaya, the client needed to core through the wall at selected locations. However, they first required clear information about the wall thickness and internal reinforcement to avoid damaging any rebar and compromising the tank’s structural integrity.
Our Approach & Result
There were 4 points that the client requested us to scan. With Xradar™’s enhanced concrete scanning technology, we conducted a structural assessment to provide precise data on wall thickness and mapped out the reinforcement layout. Our team recorded rebar spacing, cover, diameter, and arrangement, as requested by the client.
We also performed concrete compression strength testing. This included coring at 2 locations, followed by lab testing to verify concrete grade and strength. The full assessment and coring process were completed in approximately 5 hours through a coordinated effort between our engineers and operators.
A water tank in Ampang Jaya was scheduled for structural upgrades that involved coring through its concrete wall. To ensure safety, the project team needed to understand the tank’s construction in detail before moving forward. The key priorities were to avoid rebar damage and to validate that the wall could handle the planned intervention.
Using Xradar™ concrete scanning, our team mapped the tank wall at 4 locations. The scan results included the full reinforcement profile to help the client determine safe coring zones without risking the structure’s load-bearing capability. This includes:
- Rebar cover
- Rebar spacing
- Rebar diameter
- Rebar layout
To complement the scan, our team also carried out concrete compression testing. We cored 2 sections of the wall and sent the samples for lab analysis to determine concrete grade and compressive strength.
The project was completed in 5 hours, with both our engineers and operators working together on-site to deliver a complete assessment. With accurate, non-destructive data in hand, the client was able to proceed with confidence, knowing exactly how to approach the upgrade without affecting the tank’s structural performance.
