As of July 2025, Malaysia’s Sales and Services Tax (SST) has officially expanded to include the construction sector, bringing rectification, refurbishment, and demolition services into its taxable scope. The Ministry of Finance has confirmed that registration for affected providers will begin soon, marking a significant shift in how construction projects will be costed and executed moving forward.

Industry response has been swift, with concerns raised by the Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) over how this could drive up costs, particularly for ongoing and small-scale projects. It was mentioned that these services are often reactive, necessary to correct structural or safety risks and taxing them may discourage timely rectification.

For Sonicon, we understand the implications of this shift. And more importantly, we’re ready to help clients navigate it. With tax now layered into every corrective action, efficiency, speed, and accuracy are no longer just operational goals. They are financial imperatives.

That’s why our approach is designed to reduce avoidable costs. From using Xradar™ scanning to prevent rework and damage, to deploying robotic demolition and advanced surface preparation that reduces turnaround time, we help clients avoid two of the most common drivers of increased tax exposure: scope creep and unexpected delays.

Take for example a typical structural strengthening project. When handled by multiple subcontractors, there’s a risk of duplicated work or miscommunication. With SST applied to each service provider’s scope, that duplication now comes with a cost. As a one-stop solution provider, We integrate assessment, rectification, and finishing under one roof. This leads to lower coordination risk, fewer overlaps, and better cost control, especially in an SST-driven market.

As the industry adapts to this new reality, we believe the future belongs to those who can plan better, execute cleaner, and deliver faster.

Good construction also includes good financial sense.
