The Challenge

Genting SkyAvenue required a new escalator to be installed in a confined commercial space. The job involved creating a service opening through an existing concrete slab and strengthening the surrounding structure to support the added weight of the escalator while remaining operational at all times due to Genting’s status as a major tourist attraction. The client also specifically requested to ensure bolts for railings would not interfere with existing reinforcement when attaching the steel plates.

Our Approach & Result

We began with a structural scan using Xradar™ to locate all embedded elements within the beam so that we can avoid bolting the steel plates through the rebars. Based on the scan and site conditions, we selected wire sawing as the cutting method due to its minimal vibration, low noise, and ability to perform clean cuts in confined areas for such a thick structure.

After the service opening was completed, we proceeded with structural strengthening works. This included reinforcing the beams and surrounding slab area to handle the increased load from the escalator. All strengthening measures were designed to meet the structural requirements and load-bearing specifications provided by the client.

A new escalator was to be installed at Genting SkyAvenue, requiring a service opening through an existing concrete slab. The job had to be executed in a tight, confined space within an operational commercial area. To avoid damaging reinforcement bars, post-tensioned cables, or embedded utilities for the attachment of the steel plates, we began with a structural scan using

Given the restricted access and need for precision, we selected the wire saw for the service opening. Its minimal dust, low-noise, low-vibration profile made it ideal for cutting in such an environment without disrupting nearby operations as Genting has to continue its operation daily as a major tourist destination. The cut was completed cleanly and safely, with no damage to the surrounding structure.

Following the opening, we carried out beam and slab strengthening works to prepare the structure for the additional load from the escalator. This included reinforcement to ensure long-term structural stability.

The project demonstrated Sonicon’s ability to deliver complete concrete solutions — from structural assessment and cutting to strengthening — all in-house, under one coordinated workflow.
